Political Correctness run amok or "cultural sensitivity"? Neither, I say... It's just poor.
The case of the County of Los Angeles vs. IT terminology. I couldn't quite believe it when I first heard about it, it's ludicrous - one black man sees the labels "slave" and "master" on hardware devices in a US university and immediately thinks that the whole IT community is being racist towards blacks' by mocking their history. How blatantly idiotic can you get?
However, the LA county officials have to take any complaint like this seriously, no matter how out-of-context the subject is. the terms "master" and "slave" have been around pretty much since people started using one computer to serve or control another, so yes it might resemble the whole master/slave thing to some people but they should realise that it has a logical application to devices too.
Stupid, just stupid. Proof positive once again that the US is the new home of pettiness.

Tuesday, November 25 Retro: it's all cyclical.
I bet we'll be seeing something like this on the nGage soon... A Flash remake of a classic game. Who remembers this with SNES light guns? O yes. Duck Hunt 2003
And on a Flash tip, here's a pretty damn cool site where you can make the celebrities sing lyrics that you type in! Very cool. Let Them Sing It For You!
(Tip: try copying and pasting in something like these lyrics from Feel Alright by Bob Marley and the Wailers... See what happens? Ok. Now your challenge, regardless of whether you choose to accept it, is to find other lyrics that make the script play the sample from the same song from which the lyrics have come from! It's not impossible... :P
Some lyrics to start you off: "One love, one heart, let's get together and we will feel all right"
Have fun.)
Bye for now. =)

Saturday, November 22 Estimating the Airspeed Velocity of an Unladen Swallow, And Other Miscellaneous Activities
Yes, I know it's been a while since I did this brainsmudge. But rest assured, this one'll be a good un.
You know the old adage, right....
"What's the average airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?" "What, an African or an European swallow?" "...Well, I don't know thatAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGHWWAAHHHHHHGGGGG"
... Yes? good.
Well, some clever dicky bird's (ahaha) gone and worked it out, haven't they - and they've only gone and done it with "Strouhal numbers and simplified flight waveforms" - positively primative! I say. Wot wot.
Perhaps Python had something in counting 3. (You'll understand when you read it).
Well now, I thought I was a fast typist (120wpm sound fast enough for you?), but this woman just goes and gets 170wpm and a top speed of 212 words per minute.
That's insane.
Her name's Barbara Blackburn, and I have to admit, I doff my cap to her. That's pretty damn fast.
i think they should introduce that anti-spam law early, and nail the suckas. With Mr. T's help.
Ah, hell, while I'm at it: some random links. b3ta - the Victorian Web (most outrageous in the area of amusement, one tells one)
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand yet another Google innovation. The Google Deskbar. It's just like what you get already in a) LiteStep b) all versions of Linux c) the desktops of inventive users of Windows' HTML features for the desktop, but in its own little package: click here to get the fool. Or click here for yonder Google Deskbar FAQ.
While we're on the subject of Google, look! Google's trendy (and Al Sharpton's a lesbian! hahahaha). How rare :D ... And I know how much everybody reads this thing, so while you're all interested in my blog, why don't you just read about how long people stay on these damn things already (it's something like 93 seconds... My 2 readers are done in half that time). :P
In summation... Well, what can I say. Not much really, other than for all you geeks out there: here's an article on information consolidation and web service useability across different platforms via the upcoming WinFS schema integration plans - all on Ray Ozzie's Weblog. Clever man.
Did you know Blogger's trendy, too? Nah, bet you didn't - but you do now! Huzzah, and there was much rejoicing.
Scuse me, I'm just off to do some Amazon Hacking. Cheers :D
Oh, and to any Aussies who are reading this: NER NER NER-NER NER. Yaa boo sucks... We're going to take Aussieland over like nobody's business, we started you off there anyway, we can take it back as our own country any day we like. We've already made a start with "your" famous landmarks (not that you ever made them famous anyway, only English singers are the ones that are ever good there).
Now that wasn't a random post at all, was it.

Monday, November 17 Microsoft, Capital Radio, NTL Broadcast and RadioScape Announce Trial Of 5.1-Channel Surround Sound Over DAB Using Windows Media 9 Series
"In a First for DAB, Radio Fans in London Will Be Able to Listen To Capital Radio in 5.1-Channel Surround Sound."
Oh dear, looks like Microsoft just can't stop getting their dirty little fingers in all of the media pies. A country full of DAB listeners who are tied to the Microsoft Terms of Service and a country full of broadcasters who have to pay the hefty Microsoft licensing? Good plan! Did you think that all up by yourself?
Pssht. Great.

Saturday, November 8 HI IAM CHRISTOPHRE WELCOM 2 MY WBE SIET
... What I think I would write if I was the worst web designer in the world for my first sentence.
... Urgh. :) Everybody hates badly-designed web sites; yet everybody loves them - a bit like rollercoasters, some people think they're awful but still get something from riding them. I always have fun looking at badly-designed sites and cringing, then laughing - it's awful, the standard of some sites. So, EDevCafe have started a competition -
There's a new virus on the loose, and it spreads via Outlook and Outlook Express. This one's a little more intelligent though; it embeds itself into the signature file on an HTML-formatted email, and thus executes whenever you open an infected email.
......... Oh dear. Time to get the virus scanner up to date again.
If you want more info, my good old friend reg has all the info you could ever want, need or desire.
I put a fiver on it that i get ten of these infected emails within the next week.

Today, toilet paper celebrates its 100th year since it came into being.
Hooray for the bog roll everyone.
Oh, and my blood type's B RH Negative, I found out today. Once again, anybody over 17 in the UK in good health should give blood. It's a good thing to do.
